Hasina assures Britons of fair polls

London, Jul 26 (bdnews24.com) — The Prime Minister has told a group of British MPs that Bangladesh will hold elections like any other democratic nation.

Sheikh Hasina received the members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Bangladesh at her St Pancras Renaissance Hotel room on Thursday afternoon.

She discussed parliamentary government, democracy, elections and the socio-economic scene of Bangladesh with the MPs, Hasina's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad told the press.

The Prime Minister mentioned the more than 5,200 elections, including parliamentary by-elections and local government elections, were held during her government's current tenure.

She said that many opposition candidates had won these elections, which showed that the elections were free and fair.

Hasina told the group that Bangladesh's Election Commission was independent and it faced no interference from the government.

She reflected on her long struggle for democracy and asserted that nothing that could impede democracy would be tolerated.

The Prime Minister told the members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Bangladesh that the opposition leader had been present on only eight days in the ninth parliament.

She remarked that military rule had impeded growth for a long time in the country and called for increased investments from the United Kingdom. She also talked about special economic zones.

Lord Sheikh, Baroness Tonge, Keith Vaz, Peter Bottomley, Jim Fitzpatrick and Rushanara Ali were members of the group. They praised Hasina's efforts in development of Bangladesh.

Foreign Minister Dipu Moni, ambassador-at-large M Ziauddin and Bangladesh's High Commissioner in London Saidur Rahman were also present at the meeting.

Earlier, Lord Ahmed of Wimbledon called on the Prime Minister. He praised the Prime Minister's initiatives in different international forums for climate change.

ADB JICA extend loan deal deadline

Abdur Rahim Harmachi
bdnews24 Chief Economics Correspondent

Dhaka, July 31 (bdnews24.com)—Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have extended by a month the deadline for disbursement of the loan they pledged to provide for the Padma bridge project.

An Economic Relations Division (ERD) official preferring anonymity told bdnews24.com that Resident Representatives of these international donor agencies in Bangladesh handed the extension letters at 2:30pm at the ERD office.

"The deadline for the loan agreement (disbursement of money) with ADB and JICA is expiring on Tuesday. ERD had sent letters to both the agencies for extending the deadline. They have extended the deadline separately in response to the letters," said the ERD official who is familiar with the matter.

Of the $ 2.9 billion proposed project, ADB had agreed to provide over $ 610 million while JICA pledged $ 400 million.

Regarding the extension of the deadline, Muhith said, "I have just come to know that ADB and JICA have extended their loan agreement deadline by a month. It has given rise to hopes. It's good news for us. Now, let us see what the World Bank does," said Muhith.

"But I believe the World Bank has to come back," Muhith added.

Major donor of the project, the World Bank cancelled its loan agreement for $ 1.2 billion on June 29 alleging corruption. The government has been asking the lead agency for reviewing its decision since then.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, however, announced that the bridge will be constructed with own fund, if need be and during her recent UK tour, she urged Bangladeshi expatriates to remit more money to help government build it.

After the World Bank pulled out of Bangladesh's biggest infrastructure project yet, the government sent letters to the three other donors to continue with their funding. The third donor, Islami Development Bank, is supposed to contribute $ 140 million in the project.

Confirming the matter, Finance Minister AMA Muhith had earlier told bdnews24.com that JICA President was approached to hold talks with the World Bank President over funding of the project.

On July 9, the Minister also sat with representatives of different donor countries and agencies for discussing the matter with them. None from World Bank attended the meeting.

As things took a turn for the worse, former Communications Minister Abul Hossain finally resigned from his office as Information and Communication technology this month.

Additionally, former Secretary to the Bridges Division Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan was sent on leave apparently following the Washington-based global lender's recommendation over taking action against some government officials for their involvement in 'corruption' in the project.

While announcing its decision, the World Bank alleged the government did not take any measure even though it had asked the government to take action regarding the 'corruption'
